The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as just a young girl. Her aunt worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay quickly was captivated after showing her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and influenced the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma inspire her later to make the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for television journalism. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
